Internet Explorer flaw fixed: Microsoft

BOSTON - Microsoft Corp said it has fixed a security bug in Internet Explorer that hackers exploited to attack some customers.

The attacks prompted the German government and security experts to urge people to temporarily stop using the browser.

The software maker said late Wednesday that the permanent repair to the software, used by hundreds of millions of people, would be released on Friday. A majority of Microsoft Windows users have their computers set to automatically download that update.

Microsoft spokeswoman Yunsun Wee said in a statement that "the vast majority" of Internet Explorer users had not been attacked as a result of the security flaw.

The vulnerability in Internet Explorer was identified on Friday by a Luxembourg-based security researcher. His computer was infected while analyzing a computer server used last year to launch a cyber industrial espionage campaign on dozens of chemical makers and defense contractors.

Network security firm AlienVault said on Tuesday that it had discovered three other servers that hosted malicious websites that exploited the Internet Explorer flaw. It said the latest round of attacks targeted defense contractors, not the general public.

Internet Explorer was the world's second-most widely used browser last month, with about a 33% market share, according to StatCounter. It was close behind Chrome, which had 34% of the market.

Madoff victims to receive $2.48B payout

Victims of Bernard Madoff's fraud will soon receive $2.48 billion to help cover their losses, more than tripling their total recovery to about $3.63 billion, the trustee liquidating the imprisoned swindler's firm said.

Checks ranging from $1,784 to $526.9 million were mailed on Wednesday to 1,230 former customers of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, according to trustee Irving Picard. The average payout is $2.02 million.

Madoff's victims earlier recovered $1.15 billion, including sums committed by the Securities Investor Protection Corp, which helps customers of failed brokerages.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland in Manhattan authorized the latest distribution last month following two legal victories for the trustee.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court decision that endorsed Picard's methods for calculating losses. In July, a former Madoff customer dropped a court challenge to a $7.2 billion forfeiture by the estate of Madoff investor Jeffry Picower. Of that sum, $5 billion would go to the Madoff firm's estate, and the rest to the U.S. government.

Picard has recovered $9.15 billion, or 53 percent of the $17.3 billion he believes was lost in Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

The trustee is holding some funds in reserve as some Madoff victims pursue their own cases to recover more money.

Picard said this litigation is delaying further distributions. The trustee is also appealing court decisions that have limited his claims against banks such as JPMorgan Chase & Co that did business with Madoff.

A spokeswoman for Picard was not immediately available to comment on the latest distribution.

The market for trading claims on potential recoveries from Madoff's estate will adjust for the distribution, according to Joseph Sarachek, managing director of claims trading at CRT Capital Group LLC, a Stamford, Connecticut-based broker-dealer.

He said claims that recently traded at around 69 cents on the dollar will likely soon trade in the 30s. "The Madoff market is fairly volatile," Sarachek said. "The real question is when people think the next distribution will be."

Lifland has authorized Picard and his law firm, Baker & Hostetler, to bill $321.2 million of legal fees to pursue Madoff cases for the period ended Jan. 31, 2012.

Madoff was arrested in December 2008 and pleaded guilty three months later. The 74-year-old is serving a 150-year sentence in a North Carolina federal prison.

The case is Securities Investor Protection Corp. v. Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 08-ap-01789.

Samsung to add iPhone 5 to U.S. lawsuits vs Apple

SEOUL  - Samsung Electronics Co plans to add Apple Inc's iPhone 5 to existing patent lawsuits against its U.S. rival, stepping up its legal challenge to Apple as the two smartphone leaders seek to assert rights to key technologies.

The fresh legal step by the South Korean group comes as Apple booked orders for over 2 million iPhone 5s in the first 24 hours of its availability. The product is due to hit stores on Friday.

Samsung and Apple are locked in patent battle in 10 countries and the stakes are high as the two vie for top spot in the booming smartphone market.

Both companies are also raising marketing spending to promote their latest products ahead of the crucial year-end holiday season.

"Samsung anticipates that it will file, in the near future, a motion to amend its infringement contentions to add the iPhone 5 as an accused product," the company said in a U.S. court filing.

"Based on information currently available, Samsung expects that the iPhone 5 will infringe the asserted Samsung patents-in-suit in the same way as the other accused iPhone models."

Samsung said in a separate statement on Thursday: "Apple continues to take aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition.

"Under these circumstances, we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights."

Apple Korea reiterated its position that it was the victim of copying, not vice versa.

"At Apple, we value originality and innovation ... We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy."

Apple scored a legal victory over Samsung in late August when a U.S. jury found the Korean firm had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded the U.S. firm $1.05 billion US in damages.

The jury also found that Apple did not infringe any of Samsung's asserted patents. Samsung has since vowed it would continue to fight.

Apple's victory was also a blow to Google Inc, whose Android software powers the Samsung products that were found to infringe Apple patents.

Samsung, the biggest Android phone maker, received a second U.S. legal setback last week when a judge at the International Trade Commission said in a preliminary ruling that Apple did not violate patents owned by Samsung.

The Korean firm was the world's top smartphone maker in the second quarter of 2012, shipping more than 50 million phones, nearly double the Apple's 26 million iPhone shipments.

Facebook to charge merchants to run Offers

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said it will start charging businesses to run Offers on its social network, turning a previously free service into a potential revenue generator at a time when Wall Street is demanding new sources of growth and profit from the company.

Facebook launched Facebook Offers earlier this year, letting retailers and other local merchants send deals to their Facebook fans. Users claim the offers from their News Feeds and redeem the vouchers at stores to get discounts.

The service has been free, but in coming weeks Facebook will require merchants to pay at least $5 on related ads to promote each Facebook Offer to a targeted audience of fans and friends of fans. The cost will vary based on the size of a company's Facebook pages.

Since Facebook went public in May, the company has been under pressure from Wall Street to show how it can turn its giant social network into a money machine. Facebook shares have lost about 40 percent of their value since the IPO.

The commerce potential of Facebook, known as f-commerce, has yet to materialize, partly because retailers have been able to feast on a host of free tools on the social network to attract customers..

Tying Facebook Offers to a paid ad service suggests the company is working to change this.

"We think this aligns incentives nicely," said Gokul Rajaram, director of product management for Facebook's advertising and Pages businesses. "The best results on Facebook Offers will come from organic distribution plus paid distribution."

In the past, some Facebook Offers have not been relevant to all users, partly because some people saw deals in their News Feeds from merchants located far away from where they live, Rajaram added.

"The requirement to pay for related ads will focus merchants on who and where they want the offer to reach," he said.

Facebook is also expanding Offers to online-only businesses, he added. Before, the service was available only to merchants with physical locations.

Facebook is also adding barcodes for offers, so customers can redeem offers more easily. The barcodes work globally, Rajaram noted.

The executive declined to disclose how many Facebook Offers have been run so far, how many merchants have taken part, or how many deals have been claimed and redeemed by consumers.

However, he said Facebook is "very happy" with the success of its Offers business.

"That's why we're expanding and investing more in it," Rajaram said.

Canadians admit to cheating the taxman

The majority of Canadians admit they've done cash deals in order to dodge the taxman — and most don't see anything wrong with it, a new survey reveals.

The Leger Marketing poll found about half of respondents (55%) said they would pay cash to a contractor to avoid paying sales tax.

Men were more likely than women to try to cut an under-the-table deal: 50% compared with 35%.

Among older Canadians, age 65 and up, 43% said it's wrong to do so, but just 17% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 agreed.

A majority of those polled (69%) also think bartered or traded items shouldn't have to be reported on tax returns, and 51% said tips earned by service people should be tax-exempt.

H&R Block Canada commissioned the poll, which was conducted online from July 30 to Aug. 1, with 1,500 Canadians 18 or older.

A probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

More details on Air Canada's low-cost carrier plan

Air Canada will operate its planned low-cost airline as a wholly owned unit with its own management team, the company's chief financial officer said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a CIBC investor conference in Montreal, Michael Rousseau said Air Canada would reveal more details of the ramp-up, including the branding, of the new discount carrier in the next couple of weeks.

Air Canada, Canada's biggest airline, last month said it would start up a low-cost airline in 2013 to fly to holiday destinations in North America, the Caribbean and Europe, slowly ramping up over time to a 50-aircraft operation.

The loss-making carrier has touted a low-cost division as a way to cut its high costs and boost revenue and market share after years of stagnation.

Details about the structure of the new airline have been sparse, giving rise to speculation that Air Canada could bring in a foreign airline or financial player as a partner.

Air Canada has taken "a lot of time and energy" to study different low-cost models, which have exploded in the airline industry globally, and usually take the form of a wholly owned or partnership structure, Rousseau said. "The model will be 100 percent (owned), separate leadership," he said. "It will have a separate management group because we want to ensure that we maintain the low-cost mentality."

Repeating comments along the lines of those made by Air Canada Chief Executive Calin Rovinescu last month, Rousseau said it would take several years for the discount carrier to ramp up to 50 planes.

The new airline "will not have a material impact in 2013," he said.

Some of Air Canada's current flights to holiday destinations in the Caribbean and the United States will "flip" to the discount airline as they don't make as much money inside the mainline carrier as Air Canada would like, Rousseau said.

Air Canada's discount airline plan was a non-starter until late July when a federal arbitrator imposed a new labor agreement on its pilots. They had opposed the start-up, which will pay pilots less than they earn at the mainline carrier.

Wanita Zimbabwe Memperkosa Pria Seolah sudah menjadi kesepakatan sosial bahwa pemerkosaan menempatkan pria sebagai pelaku dan wanita sebagai korban. Tapi, kesepakatan ini segera luruh setelah kita mendengar kisah pemerkosaan di Zimbabwe.

Seperti dikutip Telegraph, sejumlah media lokal memberitakan belakangan ini ada banyak kasus wanita yang nekat melakukan pemerkosaan demi mendapatkan sperma dari seorang laki-laki. Wanita-wanita itu terjebak mitos "Juju" yang menempatkan sperma sebagai simbol keberuntungan.

Susan Dhliwayo, 19, seorang wanita asal Zimbabwe merasakan efek buruk dari pemberitaan itu. "Sekarang banyak pria takut jalan dengan wanita yang baru dikenal. Mereka tidak percaya lagi dengan wanita," katanya.

Sejumlah wanita yang mempercayai mitos sesat itu kerap menyasar pria pendatang. Mereka nekat memberi obat stimulan seksual lalu memaksanya melakukan hubungan intim di bawah ancaman. Kasus ini merebak sejak 2009.

Banyak sosiolog di negara itu mengungkapkan bahwa sperma-sperma yang terkumpul akan digunakan untuk ritual tradisional demi mendapatkan keberuntungan dalam segala hal--mulai dari memajukan bisnis, hingga melindungi diri dari penjahat. "Sungguh tak masuk akal," kata seorang sosiolog dari Universitas Zimbabwe, Tonton Ruparanganda.

Kasus ini bahkan menarik perhatian kelompok hak asasi wanita di negara tersebut. Mereka mengritik media yang seolah-olah telah menghakimi semua wanita sebagai pemerkosa. Mereka mengingatkan ada banyak kasus kekerasan terhadap wanita yang belum terselesaikan. "Yang seharusnya menjadi fokus adalah bagaimana menyelamatkan wanita-wanita itu dari jebakan ritual sesat."
